What is UPIR?
Upper Peninsula International Raceway (UPIR) is an abbreviated course carved out of the current racing facility on the Delta County Fairgrounds.
What is Happening at UPIR?
Good Question. There is a lot of buzz around the racetrack on the Delta Co. Fairgrounds, especially in the Midwestern racing community. The U.P. State Fair Authority, Delta County Chamber of Commerce, and several members of the former Upper Peninsula Racing Association are conducting a feasibility analysis in 2010. The group is working toward examining the financial prospects of reconfiguring and reopening the facility in 2011 on a full-time basis.
Reconfiguring?
Through the feasibility analysis, and some fund raising, the management team hopes to reconfigure the facility into a high-banked 3/8-mile for the 2011 season. The surface and management structure of the track has yet to be determined.
How is the Group Raising Funds?
Three exhibition races are planned for the 2010 season at UPIR. All of the funds collected during the three exhibition races will be used to support the track. The management team also hopes to gauge Delta County’s interest in racing through fan response to these events.
When are the Exhibition Races?
Mark these three Saturdays on your Calendar: June 12, July 31 and August 21.
What Will I See at UPIR?
Hang on tight and be ready for some action! You will see door-to-door, fender-to-fender full-contact action on one of the smallest racing courses in the Midwest.
The Small Car division will allow any vehicle less than 192 inches in length to compete with some safety modifications. Be ready for a swarm of these small cars to race three or even four-wide on the 1/8th mile course!
Street legal cars and trucks will be allowed to run in the Tough Truck/Car division. Each vehicle in this division will be timed as it races in an “S” shape through the track.
Finally, the Microsprints will set a blistering pace around UPIR. These wing sprints powered by a 650 cc motorcycle engine are a favorite on the ice in Escanaba, just as the will be at UPIR!
