Joseph Franich was born in Gratiot County, MI, where he grew up on a family farm. During his childhood on the farm, he gained many practical skills, a master’s degree in daydreaming, and an appreciation for the natural world. He got his start in photography documenting abandoned farmhouses and barns with a 110-pocket camera, and later a 35mm point and shoot camera.
Franich was drawn north from a young age, his most cherished childhood memories revolve around spending time with his grandparents on Drummond Island. He first visited Alaska in his early 20s and has since been unable to resist the draw of Alaska’s vast wilderness, big skies, and abundant wildlife. He now splits his time between his cabin on Drummond Island, and a remote arctic research facility, 370 miles north of Fairbanks, AK.
I am a Drummond Island, MI based analog and digital photographer, currently working in Alaska and northern Michigan. My current body of work, Latitude, is an exploration of nature through visual poetry, with solitude and vulnerability as the main themes. My photographs often feature wildlife, as an aid to convey a feeling.
