Bark River Park Upgrade

June 13 @ 8:00 am - June 16 @ 5:00 pm

The playground equipment at Bark River Park by the senior center and off US Highway 2 41 needs an upgrade due to safety concerns, and the Senior Center Park needs inclusive equipment for children with disabilities. The current equipment is over 30 years old and not accommodating for children with disabilities. The merry-go-round and teeter-totter are both made of wood, which can easily splinter and needs to be replaced often because of exposure to the elements here in Michigan. The swings only allow for two people and aren’t designed for children with disabilities. The play area at the highway park is too small to accommodate more than a few children at a time, and it doesn’t offer children with disabilities the opportunity to express themselves through play. The fence surrounding the playground is also dilapidated and needs to be replaced. Our goal is to replace the outdated and unsafe equipment with newer equipment, as well as remove the old fence and replace it with a new one. The Park by the senior center is the main focus for adding the inclusive equipment, which will include flooring for children with wheelchairs and gate issues to be able to walk safely. There is no inclusive equipment for children with disabilities in either park. It will enhance the smaller park that is already there, and some of the current items there will be moved to the Highway Park to create more items of play. Upgrading these parks would create an equal opportunity for all youth visiting this playground. We also aim to provide seating for supervising adults and offer a safe, inclusive space for all families, regardless of their needs or socioeconomic background. These communities have diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, with some families being exceptionally wealthy and others being less fortunate. Many single-parent families and children placed in foster care with loving families reside in these communities. This project could benefit at least one thousand people annually. Offering an inclusive play area for children with disabilities could increase the number of visitors to the park. The goal is to be completed by the end of June 16th, 2024. This is a new sponsorship project that The Heart of the North Lions Club and the Bark River Lions have decided to undertake in our community with the help of multiple other organizations. This project is directly for the youth in mainly Bark River and Harris Townships, but we have so many other Delta County residents who come to use the parks or stop off the highway. This project originally started with The Heart of the North Lions, which wanted to do something for the community. It has since expanded and to include many other groups who know this needs to be done for our community.
Partners: We Build Fun company inc., Bark River Lions Club, Bark River Township Supervisor and board member Matt Hanson, Kiwanis and Rotary club of Escanaba. The Bark River Lions Club will be helping with funding and worker help for the removal and moving of equipment. Matt Hanson has been involved with mapping the locations at both parks and helping to secure funding. The Kiwanis and Rotary club are providing funding and work help for removal and installation of equipment as well as The Heart of the North Lions for funding and work. This project is a testament to the power of community collaboration and the shared commitment to the well-being of our children.
There were multiple community and committee meetings to discuss the logistics and planning of the inclusive playground. Due to space constraints, all-inclusive equipment has to be installed in the park by the Senior Center, and then more play pieces will be taken to the park off Highway. If there are any issues with funding, there will be communication at the Bark River township meetings for further discussion. The only paid person in this project is the Equipment Engineer through the company We Build Fun Inc., who is doing the engineered design work for the parks.
